Apartheid America is Coming! Are You Ready to Resist?!!

by Thomas Pearce

From the beginning of the United States rich white men have brutally imposed slavery, genocide, and dictatorial control over American Indians, African Americans, Latinos and anyone else who they saw as posing a threat to their hegemony. In 1803 Thomas Jefferson proposed the Indian Removal Act. It passed after Andrew Jackson was elected president and the removal of all tribes East of the Mississippi began. During this same time slavery was in full effect. Then the Civil War came because Industrialists in the North wanted to take away the South’s economic competitiveness. In this author’s humble opinion every war this country has ever fought with the exception of World War 2 was fought to dominate poorer nations. Even World War 2 was entered into very late and the United States tried to stay out of it till the very last. So today, what path is the rich-white-multinational-corporate power structure taking this country down?

We know this: the birthrates of people of color are vastly larger than those of white people and this nation is expected to be majority people of color.

CNN reports that “By 2050, minorities will be the majority in America, and the number of residents older than 65 will more than double, according to projections released Thursday by the U.S. Census BureauThe Census Bureau looks at 2000 results and assumptions about future childbearing, mortality rates and migration.Minorities, classified as those of any race other than non-Hispanic, single-race whites, currently constitute about a third of the U.S. population, according to Census figures. But by 2042, they are projected to become the majority, making up more than half the population. By 2050, 54 percent of the population will be minorities.”

What does that mean for the political development of the US? Well Latino’s and African Americans will make up the bulk of that majority. What are white politicians doing to keep control as a result of these facts? The Republican Party is in a race to make friends of people of color and Latinos in particular while at the same time they are moving to take political advantage of their racial majority as quickly as possible.

70% of state legislatures are now controlled by the Republican Party. As they gain control they are redrawing the political districts in such a way and changing laws in such a way that they are currently finding themselves in political control of congress even though the majority of Americans voted for Democrats in the 2012 elections. So how do the Republicans and wealthy white people always end up on top of the food chain politically and economically?

By laying the political groundwork for what will ultimately fruit as an Apartheid government in the United States. What does that look like? It looks brutal, it looks violent, it looks hopeless, and it looks inevitable. We will in my opinion need to build new methods of organizing and new methods of resistance that will cancel out these plans. The majority of people in this hemisphere have indigenous blood in their veins. The real possibility that the majority of people of North America will once again be Indian. Wealthy people have invested a lot of time, wars violence, and political manipulation to be in control. We can expect them to do more of the same in an attempt to keep that control.

What is Apartheid? According to Wikipedia:

  1. Apartheid was a system of racial segregation in South Africa enforced through legislation by the National Party governments, the ruling party from 1948 to 1994, under which the rights, associations, and movements of the majority black inhabitants were curtailed and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained.
Apartheid was a system of governance that was filled with images like the one to the left. Now think of the images of Ferguson and protests against police brutality that we have seen in recent years. Think of the indigenous and Latino people who have been seen in New Mexico in response to the 37 police shootings that have taken place there in recent years. Not much different. One can expect that these militarized police tactics that have dominated the news recently will be making headlines more and more frequently. Such state sponsored brutality is inevitable, unless a real political strategy can be engaged that answers the following three questions:
    1) How will we wrest control from the corporate dominated Republicans and conservative Democrats who are currently running all aspects of our lives?
    2) How will we win politically in redrawn political districts that basically lock the people out of being stake holders in the system they are devising?
3)Will we be able to mount a peaceful and credible challenge to the military control this system is willing to employ against it’s own citizens?
Many of you may be wondering why the Republicans are so angry to see the president make reforms that might allow Latinos and other immigrant groups to participate in the political system. Well isn’t it obvious? They don’t want anymore people of color in the political system. Period. At the same time they say they want to win over Latinos to their social agenda. They are hoping by using abortion, gay rights and a few other issues they can win over more socially conservative Latinos, Haitians, and other immigrant groups.
So the coming 26 years may look like Ferguson to the tenth power unless they can be stopped. South Africa’s Apartheid government had the participation of right wing paramilitary white extremist organizations. In the US we have the militias. We have seen the Ku Klux Klan and other extremist groups come to Ferguson claiming they were going to help the police keep protesters under control. See how that could snowball?
We have got to build a new majority in this country that can act strategically and decisively to thwart this current effort. Of course we have seen the Republican controlled legislatures rolling back the right to vote through voter ID laws. So far their strategy is working. We have to be smart and act with integrity to take actions that will make their efforts impossible. It will be a rocky ride and it will not be easy. Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin have all gone “Right to Work”. They are gutting the power of unions. The more power they get the more power they will try to consolidate. Their ultimate goal is control. We have got to work tirelessly to make sure they do not get it.
The Democratic Party’s last refuge is the presidency. Voter ID laws are being put into place to try to change the equation so that the Republicans can win a national election. If that happens their plan will be complete. The Senate of course is also harder for them to keep control of. Right now they have control of both houses of congress and the Supreme Court. In 2016 will be what is probably the most important election in this country’s illegitimate history. Many claim this is what needs to happen for Americans to get so angry they will finally revolt. I feel this is an irresponsible strategy that people of color will pay the price for.

The good news is that there is a new crop of young people coming of age who are interested in community organizing and who are interested in resisting the fascist tendencies of the Republican extremists. In the last two weeks the Republican congress voted to give Apache Sacred lands to the Rio Tinto mining group in the military expenditure bill. Will the Democrats sign this bill to get  a budget deal worked out? See once again the people who will pay the price for this are the Apache. There is a lot at stake in the next few years and some wrong moves could really hurt a lot of people.
